Hampton Roads service
Appliance Pickup in Hampton Roads
Old washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, and water heaters are too heavy for curbside pickup and most stores will only haul if you're buying a replacement. PoofHaul haulers handle appliance pickup as a regular service across Hampton Roads.
How appliance pickup works on PoofHaul
Snap a photo + note the appliance
Type (washer, dryer, dishwasher, oven, water heater) and whether it's still hooked up matters. If gas or electrical needs to be disconnected, say so.
Get bids from haulers who do appliances
Not every hauler handles every appliance type. Bids will come from haulers who can do the job, with the price reflecting weight, hookup status, and disposal fees.
Hauler handles disconnect + disposal
If you note the appliance needs to be disconnected, the hauler can do it (water shutoff, electrical, gas). Disposal goes to the appropriate facility. You pay one all-in price.
What we typically haul
Washer or dryer
Standard pickup; mention if it's still hooked up to water/accent-2/gas
Dishwasher
Often needs to be unhooked from cabinets + plumbing
Oven or stove
Gas units need the line capped before haul
Water heater
Tank may still be holding water; haulers will drain on-site
AC unit (window or condenser)
Window units are easy; central condensers with refrigerant need EPA-certified handling, see refrigerator page
Before you book
Refrigerators, freezers, and full AC units have refrigerant
Refrigerant requires EPA-certified handling. Use the dedicated refrigerator removal page for those, they have different pricing and require specific disposal channels.
Gas appliances
Gas ovens, gas water heaters, and gas dryers need the gas line shut off and capped before removal. Tell the hauler in advance so they bring the right tools.
Appliance Pickup FAQ
- How much does appliance pickup cost in Hampton Roads?
- $80 to $200 per appliance is typical for standard appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, water heaters). Refrigerators and full AC units run higher because of refrigerant handling.
- Will the hauler disconnect the appliance for me?
- Most haulers will disconnect water lines and standard electrical. Gas requires a hauler with the right experience, mention it in the job and the bids will come from haulers who can handle it.
- What about scrap value?
- Most haulers route metal appliances to scrap dealers when possible. SPSA accepts scrap metal free at the Regional Landfill. The bid you see is the all-in price; haulers pocket any scrap revenue but it doesn't reduce your cost.
- Can the appliance be donated?
- Working appliances under 5 years old can sometimes be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Norfolk + VB locations). Older or non-working appliances generally have to be disposed of.
- What if it's stuck in a basement or upstairs?
- Mention stairs + access in the job description. Haulers price disassembly and carry distance into their bid. Older basement-installed water heaters sometimes need to be cut down.
- Are there any items haulers won't take?
- Anything with hazardous fluids that haven't been drained, anything biohazard, anything radioactive. Standard household appliances are all fair game.
- Will Lowe's or Home Depot haul it for free with a new appliance?
- Both will haul the old unit for free or for a small fee when you buy a replacement. If you're not replacing, PoofHaul is the path. Even if you are, individual haulers often beat the chain pricing on tricky removals (basement, second floor, etc.).
