Hot Tub Removal in Hampton Roads
Hot tub removal is one of the most physically demanding HR junk-haul jobs. A standard 6-person hot tub weighs 600+ pounds dry, sits on a concrete pad or deck, and usually has hardwired electrical that needs to be disconnected. PoofHaul connects you to haulers who do hot tub removal as a specialty.
How hot tub removal works on PoofHaul
Photo the tub + access path
Photos of the hot tub, the path from the tub to the street, any gates, fences, or stairs in the way, and the size of any vehicles that need to fit through. Width of the narrowest gate matters a lot.
Get bids from hot-tub-experienced haulers
Not every hauler does hot tubs. The ones who bid will be people who own the right equipment (saws-all for disassembly, dollies, sometimes a small crane) and have done it before.
Disassembly + haul-out + disposal
Hot tubs come out in pieces. Hauler drains the water, disconnects electrical (or coordinates with an electrician), cuts the shell into manageable sections, and trucks it to the SPSA Regional Landfill. Total time on-site is usually 3 to 6 hours.
What we typically haul
Standard 4-6 person backyard hot tub
Most common; baseline pricing
Larger 7-8 person or swim spa
More disassembly time, sometimes multiple loads
Hot tub on a deck (vs concrete pad)
Deck removal is sometimes part of the scope; mention if so
Inground hot tub
Different scope entirely, often involves concrete cutting + fill; ask for itemized bid
Hot tub cover + shell only (no plumbing)
Lower price; less time on-site
Before you book
Drain it 24 hours before pickup
A full hot tub holds 300+ gallons. Drain via the side spigot or a sump pump into the yard or storm drain (per local rules). A drained tub is much faster to disassemble and haul.
Disconnect electrical first
Hot tubs are usually 240V hardwired. Have an electrician disconnect at the breaker, or include the disconnect in the bid scope. Don't leave live wiring in the disassembly zone.
Access width matters more than weight
A standard 6-person hot tub is about 80 inches wide. If your gate is narrower, the hauler needs to disassemble in place, that's a different bid. Measure the narrowest point on the haul-out path before posting.
Hot Tub Removal FAQ
- How much does hot tub removal cost in Hampton Roads?
- Standard backyard hot tub runs $300 to $650. Larger swim spas, tubs requiring crane access, or tubs with major deck disassembly run $650 to $1,200+. PoofHaul shows you actual bids in writing.
- Do I need to drain the hot tub first?
- Yes, drain 24 hours before pickup if you can. A full hot tub holds 300+ gallons of water. Drained, the tub still weighs 600+ pounds; full, you're well over a ton.
- Who handles the electrical disconnect?
- You can hire an electrician (most spend 30 to 60 minutes on a hot tub disconnect for $150 to $300) or include the disconnect in the bid scope if the hauler is licensed for it. Don't leave hot wiring exposed in the work zone.
- What if the hot tub is on a deck?
- Mention it. The hauler may need to cut into the deck for access, partially dismantle the deck, or work around it. Photos of the deck around the tub help the bid be accurate.
- What about an inground hot tub?
- Different scope. Inground tubs involve concrete cutting, fill, and sometimes plumbing capping. Get an itemized bid that breaks out demolition + disposal + fill from the tub-only price.
- Can the hot tub be donated or sold instead?
- Working hot tubs that are 5 years old or newer sometimes have resale value on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Older, leaking, or non-working tubs almost always have to be disposed.
- How long does the actual removal take?
- 3 to 6 hours on-site for a standard backyard hot tub. The disassembly + haul-out is most of the time; loading + driving to SPSA is the rest. Plan to be home for the duration unless you've coordinated unattended access.
