Garage Cleanout in Hampton Roads

Garage cleanout is the most-requested PoofHaul service after mattresses. A two-car garage with a decade of stuff usually fills a small dump trailer. Bid-based pricing works well here because what looks like a 'half load' from the photo can turn into a full load once the boxes come out.

Typical price: $240 to $700 depending on volume, small pickup load to a full dump trailer

How garage cleanout works on PoofHaul

  1. Photo the garage as it stands

Wide shots showing the full pile + a few close-ups of awkward items (lawn equipment, paint cans, old electronics). The more haulers see, the more accurate the bid.

  2. Get bids that reflect real volume

Haulers who do garage cleanouts know what fits in a pickup vs. a dump trailer. The bid range you see usually splits between half-load haulers and full-trailer haulers.

  3. Hauler sorts + loads + disposes

On job day, the hauler loads everything you point at. Anything you want to keep stays. Disposal goes to the right facility for the mix (general MSW, scrap metal, yard waste separated where applicable).

What we typically haul

  • Old furniture

Couches, chairs, tables that ended up in the garage as overflow

  • Holiday decorations + storage bins

Years of accumulated bins, broken or unused

  • Lawn and garden equipment

Old mowers, broken trimmers, hoses, planters

  • Sports + hobby gear

Unused exercise equipment, kayaks, bikes, tools

  • Construction leftovers

Lumber scraps, drywall, paint cans (mostly empty)

Before you book

  • Hazardous waste

Old paint, motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks, and pesticides are not standard garage haul. JCC convenience centers and the SPSA HHW collection accept these items free for residents, separate them out before the hauler arrives or include the cleanup in the bid scope.

  • Refrigerator + appliance items

If the garage has a beer fridge, deep freezer, or AC unit, mention it. Those need EPA-certified handling and a slightly different bid.

Garage Cleanout FAQ

How much does a garage cleanout cost in Hampton Roads?
Small garage (single-car, light load) runs $240 to $360. Two-car garage with a decade of accumulation runs $400 to $600. Full dump-trailer load with construction debris or appliances runs $600 to $900+.
Do I need to be home while the hauler works?
Yes for the start, so you can confirm what stays and what goes. Once the hauler has the green light, most cleanouts run 1 to 3 hours and you don't need to supervise the loading.
Will the hauler sort recyclables?
On request. Metal goes to scrap dealers free. Cardboard + paper recyclables can be separated. Mention sorting preferences when you accept the bid; some haulers price it in, others charge a sort-time premium.
What about old paint cans?
Empty paint cans (lid off, residue dried) can go in normal trash. Half-full or full cans are HHW and need to go to SPSA HHW collection or JCC convenience center. Most haulers can route them for an add-on fee.
Can the hauler do partial cleanouts?
Yes. Tell the hauler exactly what's going (one row of bins, the south wall, the back corner). Bids will reflect the partial scope, and you only pay what you contracted.
What if more comes out than the photo showed?
If the volume on job day is materially more than the photos showed, the hauler can request a scope-change adjustment in the app before they start. You see the new price and approve (or decline) before any extra work happens.
Can a hauler haul the whole garage in one trip?
Sometimes. A small pickup truck holds about 3 cubic yards; a 16-foot dump trailer holds 12+. If you have more than that, expect multiple trips priced into the bid.
